Imagine leaving the front door of your house unlocked, not because you forgot, but because you did not know there was a lock. That is exactly what we are doing, when a computer goes without security updates. Bad actors in fact count on this.Β The door is open, and the wrong people know it.
This past week, Microsoft announced that it had found serious security holes in its Defender antivirus software, the same program that is built right into your Windows computer. Even more concerning, those holes were already being used by attackers before most people ever heard about them. The term for this is a zero-day vulnerability, which means the bad guys found the crack in the wall before the company even had a chance to fix it.
But here is the part that matters most: Microsoft had already released a free fix by the time most of us saw the news. If your computer has automatic updates turned on, you are already protected. If it does not, today is the day to change that, and I am going to walk you through exactly how.
π What Happened, in Plain English
Microsoft Defender is the security program that comes built into every modern Windows computer. You do not need to buy it, install it, or do anything special. It is just there, quietly watching over your computer every single day, at no charge.Β
Recently, Microsoft discovered that Defender had what security professionals call a zero-day vulnerability. In plain English, that means attackers found a way to break into computers through Defender before Microsoft even knew the problem existed. According to BleepingComputer, these holes were not just theoretical. They were being used in real attacks against real people.
Once Microsoft discovered the problem, their team worked quickly to create a patch, which is a digital fix, and delivered it to every Windows computer in the world through Windows Update. If your computer downloaded and installed that update, the hole is now closed. Your computer is protected from this particular threat.
This is exactly why automatic updates exist. Most of us are not reading security news every morning, and we should not have to. Microsoft watches for these problems and sends the fix to your computer quietly in the background, usually while you sleep, and you wake up to a safer machine without doing a single thing.
π Good Habits Cost Nothing, But They Are Worth Everything
I say this to every neighbor I who asks: the best security tools are the free ones that work quietly in the background without asking you for money. Automatic updates are exactly that. They are free, they work, and once you turn them on, you never have to think about them again.
People ask me sometimes whether they should pay for expensive antivirus software. My honest answer is usually no. Microsoft Defender, which is already on your computer at no extra charge, combined with automatic updates turned on, gives you a very strong line of defense.
Think of it this way. If your city repaired theΒ pothole's on your street every night while you slept, and all you had to do was leave your porch light on to let them know to come by, would you leave the light on? Of course you would! Automatic updates are that porch light. One small setting that lets Microsoft take care of the big things.
I have written about why I do not recommend paid virus protection for most people in another TechEase post. This situation is a perfect example of why: Microsoft Defender handled this threat quickly and professionally, at no extra charge. Good habits cost us nothing. Good habits are priceless. Keeping your security updates on is a priceless good habit.
π How to Check and Turn On Automatic Updates Right Now
Here is exactly how to check your settings and make sure your Windows computer is updating automatically. Follow these steps one at a time and you will be done in just a few minutes.
Click the Windows logo button in the bottom-left corner of your screen, or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
Click the gear icon that says "Settings." It looks like a small cog wheel. On Windows 11, it may appear pinned in the Start menu.
In the Settings window, look for "Windows Update" on the left side panel. Click it to open the update center.
Inside the Windows Update screen, click "Advanced options." This is where you control exactly how and when updates are handled.
Look for the toggle that says "Receive updates for other Microsoft products." Make sure it is turned on. A blue toggle means it is on.
Go back to the main Windows Update screen and click "Check for updates." If anything is waiting, let it download. Restart when prompted.
If your screen looks a little different from what I described, do not worry. Windows 10 and Windows 11 look slightly different in places. You can also read about how to schedule Windows updates so they do not interrupt your day if you want more control over when they run.
π Warning Signs That Your Computer May Not Be Updating
Sometimes people do not know their computer has quietly stopped updating. Here are the signs to watch for.
Look at the bottom-right corner of your screen, near the clock. A shield with a yellow or red mark on it means Windows is asking for your attention about something important.
Many updates require a restart to take full effect. If you always close the laptop lid or put the computer to sleep without restarting, updates may have downloaded but never fully installed. A full restart once a week is a great habit.
If you go to Windows Update and see a message that says updates are paused or that it cannot connect to check for updates, something needs to be fixed right away.
Computers that have gone a long time without updates can run slowly or behave oddly. It is not always the reason, but it is always worth checking your update history when this happens.
π The Bottom Line
Here is what I want you to take away from all of this. Microsoft found a dangerous problem and fixed it quickly, then delivered that fix to every Windows computer in the world, for free, automatically, with no action needed from you. That is remarkable when you think about it.
The only thing standing between your computer getting that fix and not getting it is whether automatic updates are turned on. It is one small toggle, and it costs absolutely nothing to switch on.
Good habits cost us nothing. Good habits are priceless. Keeping your security updates on is a priceless good habit. And if you want a friendly set of eyes to come by and make sure everything is set up correctly, that is exactly the kind of house call I make. Want to go deeper on staying safe?
