As the owner of a tech support company, one of the most common questions I get from folks here in the Tyler area is: “Robert, what antivirus software should I buy?”
My answer usually surprises them: I don’t buy any.
For years, we were trained to believe that the moment you buy a new computer, you need to purchase a yearly subscription to some overpriced, bulky “security program.” Maybe this was good advice in 2005. But today, paid antivirus programs more often than not cause more headaches than they prevent. They slow down your computer, constantly pop up with confusing scary alerts, and try to upsell you even more services.
If you are a Windows user, you already have a fantastic, free tool built right in. When paired with a few smart browser settings and healthy digital habits, it’s all the protection you need.
🔒 Windows Security: It’s Already Built In
If you have a modern Windows computer, it comes with a built-in program called Windows Security (specifically, Windows Defender).
In the past, built-in security wasn’t great. But today, independent security experts consistently rank Windows Defender right alongside, and often above, expensive paid options. It runs quietly in the background, updates itself automatically, and doesn’t slow down your machine.
🌐 The Right Browser Tools
While Windows Defender protects your computer’s files, most threats today happen right inside your web browser. You can dramatically improve your safety by installing two free “extensions” (small add-on tools) to Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
Note: I am not paid for my opinion on any products I recommend. I only recommend software that I use myself, have used in the past, or am sure are recommended by communities that use software like it.
Many accidental virus downloads happen because someone clicked a fake “Download Here” button that was actually malware disguised as an advertisement. uBlock Origin Lite is a free, safe extension that removes these deceptive ads, making your browsing cleaner, faster, and much safer.

Instead of just hiding annoying cookie pop-ups, Consent-O-Matic fills them out in the background, automatically selecting “Reject All” to protect your privacy. It’s open-source and trusted by privacy experts.

🧠 Healthy Web Surfing Habits: The Human Antivirus
The best security software in the world can’t protect you if you willingly let the bad guys in. Today’s scammers don’t use complex code to hack your computer. They use psychology to trick you.
Scammers target seniors by creating panic. You might be reading a news article when suddenly your screen locks up and a voice says: “Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft Support immediately!”
The Habit: Microsoft, Apple, and Google will never put a phone number on your screen or call you out of the blue. If this happens, do not call the number. Turn your computer off and back on. The scary message will usually be gone.
Working adults are targeted through phishing emails that look exactly like a PayPal receipt for a $500 TV you didn’t buy, or an Amazon alert saying your account is locked.
The Habit: Never click the link in the email. If you’re worried about an Amazon charge, open a new tab, type Amazon.com yourself, and log in directly. Real issues will be visible there.
Kids are targeted through video games and social media. They might see a YouTube video offering “Free V-Bucks for Fortnite” if they just download a specific file.
The Habit: Teach them that there is no such thing as free digital currency. Never install software, browser extensions, or game “cheats” recommended by strangers on Discord, TikTok, or YouTube.
Stay safe, Tyler.
